Best in the game?
I guess sometimes it’s not about being the best in the game. Sometimes it’s about being above average and distinctive, setting yourself apart and working the magic. Case in point – Indy Race Car Driver Danika Patrick. Danika joined the Indy Race Car scene a few years ago as a driver in the Rahal Letterman team. (Pro driver Bobby Rahal and the David Letterman.) In Danika’s rookie Indy year she qualified at the Indy 500 with the fastest time, unfortunately she lost the pole position, first position for the start that is, due to a technicality. She lead for a few laps, but ended up finishing fourth which was the highest ever position for a female driver for the Indy 500. While Danika’s racing career has still advanced, it’s been left in the dust by her publicity campaign.
Of course it should be mentioned that Danika also has a few things going for her in addition to her driving skill. She’s charasmatic, it is her combination of personality traits that makes her likeable. Also though, she is hot. She can pull off professional driver as well as elegant runway celebrity, with out any trouble. In any sort of competitive environment if you have something that will give you an edge or an advantage, by all means use it.
Unfortunately the fact that Danika is a woman in a “man’s sport” is ruffling a few feathers. For one, Richard Petty, aka The King, said, “I just don’t think it’s a sport for women, and so far, it’s proved out. It’s really not. It’s good for them to come in. It gives us a lot of publicity, it gives them publicity. But as far as being a real true racer, making a living out of it, it’s kind of though.” To lower the bar even further, Ed Carpenter was quoted saying, “I think Danica’s pretty aggressive in our cars. I mean, you know especially if you catch her at the right time of the month ,she might be trading plenty of paing out there.” He later retracted that statement. Breaking into the male dominated sport isn’t easy. In fact, when Danika wins a race and gets on the podium she is surrounded with racings equivalent of “Booth Babes.”
Danika is getting a lot of mileage online recently. In fact, much of the online world is talking about whether or not Danika is going to move over to NASCAR Racing. For Indy car racing to suddenly be without it’s biggest and brightest star would be a huge loss, especially since they already lag behind NASCAR and Formula One racing in popularity. Danika’s being mum the word, but has previously stated that she wanted to win the Indy 500 before thinking about moving to NASCAR. I think she’s got her sights set on winning both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500, which is something only two other drivers have ever done. I’ll be following her career with much interest.
Let’s bring it all back. To stand out in the online world, you do not have to be the best. To stand out, you have to have something distinctively different from your competitors. In business they call this a USP (Unique Selling Proposition). This has to be the most important part of an online campaign or online reputation. What do people know you for?
